Monday, 2/13

Hour 1:  Could legislation to stop online piracy and fight other internet-centered crimes like terrorism, child abuse, and fraud actually endanger the freedoms we take for granted? We’ll spend this hour with science fiction novelist, blogger, technology activist, and boingboing.net co-editor Cory Doctorow. He’ll speak at UTA’s College of Engineering Distinguished Speaker Series this evening.

Hour 2:  How could a referee’s call during a ten-and-under girl’s soccer game transform two nobodies from suburban New Jersey into internationally wanted terrorists? We’ll find out this hour with the always-hilarious Dave Barry, co-author along with Alan Zweibel, of the new novel “Lunatics” (Putnam, 2012).

Tuesday, 2/14

Hour 1:  How is a Queen different from everyone else and what should a monarch’s role be in the 21st Century? We’ll look back at the remarkable career of Queen Elizabeth II this hour with journalist and bestselling biographer Sally Bedell Smith, whose new book is “Elizabeth the Queen: The Life of a Modern Monarch” (Random House, 2012).

Hour 2:  Yoga has quickly become a big part of the go-fast, ego-fueled U.S. fitness business, but what might American yogis be missing in their quick study of a practice that’s actually thousands of years old? We’ll talk this hour with New York Times senior writer, two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, and yoga practitioner William J. Broad. His new and thoroughly-reported book is “The Science of Yoga: The Risks and the Rewards” (Simon & Schuster, 2012).

Wednesday, 2/15

Hour 1:  How might the adversity and violence of a writer’s youth both color and inform his later work? We’ll talk this hour with acclaimed novelist Andre Dubus III, whose most recent book, “Townie: A Memoir” (W. W. Norton & Company, 2012), has just been released in paperback.

Hour 2:  How can we equip ourselves for both the struggles of the day-to-day and the major challenges of loss, financial problems, and health issues? We’ll talk this hour with veteran CEO Chip Conley, founder of Joie de Vivre Hospitality and author of the new book “Emotional Equations: Simple Truths for Creating Happiness + Success” (Free Press, 2012).

Thursday, 2/16

Hour 1: How does a performer put their own career on the stage night after night and what are the challenges of playing oneself in front of a live audience? We’ll spend this hour with Emmy Award-winning and highly accomplished actor John Leguizamo. He’s in town to perform his fifth one man play, “Ghetto Klown,” at the Majestic Theatre this weekend.

Hour 2:  What moves someone to do something that’s never been tried before? We’ll examine the 1897 journey of a Swedish explorer who set out to discover the North Pole by hydrogen balloon with Alec Wilkinson, staff writer for The New Yorker. His new book is “The Ice Balloon: S. A. Andree and the Heroic Age of Arctic Exploration” (Knopf, 2012).
