KERA’s “CEO” FEATURES MAXWELL L. ANDERSON OF THE DALLAS MUSEUM OF ART

DALLAS/FORT WORTH – On the January episode of CEO, Maxwell L. Anderson recaps his first year as The Eugene McDermott Director of the Dallas Museum of Art (DMA) and looks ahead to the DMA’s return to free general admission and the launch of its free museum membership program on January 21. Host Lee Cullum talks with Anderson about plans to keep the museum’s offerings continually refreshed, in part through works of art loaned from foreign governments. Learn how new technology is being designed to enhance the experience of visitors to the DMA. “We are active in thinking about how visitors can use portable technology to learn about works in the collection. What’s in front of us is interactivity and a chance to delve into an object’s purpose, character or composition and find out an answer on the spot,” says Anderson.

ABOUT MAXWELL L.  ANDERSON

Maxwell L. Anderson assumed the role of The Eugene McDermott Director at the Dallas Museum of Art in January 2012. After graduating from Dartmouth College and receiving a Ph.D. in art history from Harvard University in 1981, he worked as curator at The Metropolitan Museum of Art for six years. Since 1987 he has directed a total of five museums, including the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Indianapolis Museum of Art. He has served on the faculties of Princeton University and the University of Rome, and is the author of dozens of publications, including The Quality Instinct: Seeing Art Through a Museum Director’s Eye. In the fall of 2012, Anderson announced the Museum’s return to free general admission and spearheaded the new DMA Friends & Partners program, which will go in to effect in January 2013. DMA Friends approaches membership as a program of engagement that is intended to build long-term relationships with visitors and to emphasize participation over the transaction-based membership model that has become common practice among museums. Anderson received an A.B. from Dartmouth College with highest distinction in art history (1977), and A.B. (1978) and PhD. (1981) degrees in art history from Harvard University.
