Art&Seek Jr. is one mom‘s quest to find activities to end the seemingly endless chorus of the “I’m Bored Blues” while having fun herself. Impossible you say? Check back on Tuesdays for kid-friendly events that are fun for adults, too.

Summer is all about seeking new adventures. Whether it be a road trip to see the big ball of string, a camp out at Lake Chaubunagungamaug, or just driving the mini-van through flooded streets, summer is the perfect time for fun and a teensy bit of thrill seeking.

Here’s this week’s picks of summer adventures.

Pop in the Top Gun CD and head to Denton Enterprise Airport this Saturday for the Denton Air Show. There will be aerobatic displays, vintage warbirds with formation flying and military demonstrations. You and the kiddos can also see historic and present-day aircraft on display. Get there early and meet the stars of the show at a special breakfast with the pilots event at 8 a.m.

Speaking of thrills, you’ll find plenty at Cirque Dreams Jungle Fantasy, a show that blends the excitement of a circus with the pageantry of a Broadway show.  Under the backdrop of a fantastical jungle, an international cast of aerialists, contortionists, acrobats, jugglers and musicians perform astounding acrobatic, aerial and athletic feats. You’ll see everything from a butterfly ballet to flipping monkeys at this explosion of color and fantasy.  The show opens this Friday for a 3-day run at the Winspear Opera house.

For another encounter of where the wild things are, check out Safari Nights at the Dallas Zoo, the family friendly concert series that runs Saturdays through August 1. You and the kiddos can take in the zoo and then stay late for a concert featuring Trout Fishing in America. Food will be available for purchase along with beer and wine. And don’t worry about the sun, the concert takes place in the cool area of the zoo’s shady Cat Green. It’s free with paid admission to the zoo.

For a REALLY good “what I did over summer vacation” story sign the kids up for the Annual Red, White & Blue Pie Eating Contest. The event, presented by Uncle Willie’s Pies, happens Friday, July 3, at Farmers Branch Historical Park, but if you want to participate in the contest you’ll  need to sign up by June 30. You and the little kiddles can feel good about going for the pie-eating gold because 100 percent of the proceeds go to support local military charities.
