Art&Seek Jr: Celebrations Galore For The Merry Month Of May

ArtandSeek.net 18

Here’s an interesting observation I made this morning. It seems as though in addition to flowers, the month of May also brings boatloads of  celebrations. Sure, we all know about Mother’s Day and Cinco de Mayo, but there are scads of lesser known “holidays” in the merry month of May worth noting. For instance, did you know May 3 is Lumpy Rug Day? A day in which we’re all encouraged to straighten our bumpy carpets. Hug Your Cat Day is observed on May 3– although June 4 is the more widely accepted date. I say go ahead and celebrate on both days because we all know how much cats loved to be hugged. May 10 is Clean Up Your Room Day–a day we’ll definitely be observing in our house. Those in the mood to get down and get funky will want to commemorate Dance Like a Chicken Day on May 14. Lastly, mark those calendars on May 22 for International Tiara Day. Everyone deserves to feel like a queen at least one day a year, right?

Celebrate all things ‘Star Wars’ on Wednesday at the East Branch of the Irving Public Library for their May the Fourth Be With You event.  Kids can dress up as their favorite ‘Star Wars’ character, play games, create crafts and meet members of costuming groups: the Rebel Legion, the Mandolorian Mercenaries, and the 501st Legion.

Silliness abounds in this Star Wars parody.

You and your little Ewoks should also check out the May the Fourth Be With You Star Wars Celebration this Wednesday in beautiful downtown Carrollton. The ‘Star Wars’-themed event will feature booths, activities, and photo opportunities. Later, grab your blankets and lawn chairs and settle in for a movie. They’ll be showing the ‘Star Wars’ parody ‘Spaceballs.’ No, it’s not ‘Star Wars’ (Disney put the kibosh on screening any of the ‘Star Wars’ films) but ‘Spaceballs’ is goofy fun and the kids will love it.

Technically Cinco de Mayo is Thursday. Those of you who don’t want to celebrate on a school night can motor on over to Jefferson Avenue in Oak Cliff this Saturday morning for the Dallas Cinco de Mayo 2016 Big Parade and Festival. In its 29th year, this parade is the largest Cinco de Mayo parade in North Texas with over 20,000 in attendance. I guess that’s why they call it the “BIG” parade! The festival that follows will have deejay music, ballet folklorico dancers, live Tejano bands and lots of vendors.

Enjoy an all-day celebration of the music and legacy of The Beatles at Abbey Road on the Square. You’ll have fun twisting and shouting as you listen to performances by some of the world’s leading Beatles tribute acts. The fun happens this Saturday at Strauss Square at the AT&T Performing Arts Center.

Your pint-sized Picassos won’t want to miss the Cottonwood Art Festival in Richardson’s Cottonwood Park this weekend. Besides being rated one of the top art festivals in the U.S., it also features an awesome interactive children’s area. ArtStop, as it’s called, is staffed by more than 100 volunteers, so your mini Monets can dive right in to an array of activities like dipping their hands into colored wax to make an impression of their hand, painting a hand thrown vase (the perfect gift for Mother’s Day), chipping away a work of art from a large block of plaster, or my favorite, throwing mud on a real potter’s wheel to form a vase.

Speaking of Mother’s Day, celebrate your mom with an afternoon of art, treats, and family at the We Watercolor Mother and Child Workshop this Sunday at the Patterson-Appleton Art Center. Kids, 7 years and older, and their moms (or mom stand-ins) can create matching still life paintings while enjoying yummy treats from Ravelin Bakery. The class will be lead by Denton artist Amanda North and all the supplies you need will be provided.
