Yesterday was our first day back to school. The ringing of the tardy bell signals the lazy days of summer are officially over. It also means instead of enjoying a random day of fun on some idle Tuesday we’ll have to once again pack all our fun into just Saturday and Sunday. Which makes this holiday weekend all the more important.  You’ll have three whole days to romp, play and of course take care of all those chores you’ve been meaning to get to all summer.

Want to make a big impression with the wee ninja in your life? Take them to the Ann & Gabriel Barbier-Mueller Museum for a look at suits of armor worn by Samurai warriors during the 17th and 18th century. You can even see the armor worn by the Samurai’s horses. This Saturday is Family Day at the museum. Enjoy free admission, family-oriented guided tours, and art activities from 1-3 p.m.

Dinosaurs will once again be roaming North Texas. The monstrously popular Dinosaurs Alive exhibit returns to the Heard Natural Science Museum and Wildlife Sanctuary for the 12th year in a row. Take a walk down the sanctuary’s half-mile nature trail and you’ll see ten life-sized animatronic dinosaurs communing with nature. The big reptiles move, growl, and of course, roar. This is one time the kids won’t need to be encouraged to get some exercise.

Head down to the fabulous Klyde Warren Park this Saturday night for a movie under the stars. They’ll be screening ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens.’ If the itty-bitties get restless you can take a stroll over to the playground to run off some energy or to go potty in the nice clean restrooms.

Speaking of stars. Take a closer look at those galaxies far, far away this Saturday night at a Star Party at Rafes Urban Astronomy Center in Denton. You and your mini astronomers can enjoy space activities, star talks, food and see objects in space through their telescopes. It’s only $5 to attend, but be sure to bring cash because they don’t accept credit cards.

How about a family cooking class at Sur La Table in Southlake.  You and the kiddos can whip up sweet and savory treats, make quick breakfasts for busy mornings, and lunches perfect for back-to-school. Instructors will walk you through cooking techniques like mixing pop tart dough from scratch, making homemade dipping sauce and more. Plus, young chefs will practice knife skills (alongside parents) and gain confidence in the kitchen.
