Get Some Shakespeare To Go With TWU’s CarPark Sonnets

ArtandSeek.net 17

The Bard’s famous “to be or not to be” has taken on greater significance during COVID-19. Whether live theater productions will “be” this year is indeed the question among theater groups everywhere.

CarPark Sonnets. 8 p.m., Oct. 14-17 in the TWU Staff & Faculty Parking Lot. Details.

Like a lot of other theater companies, Texas Woman’s University’s Theatre Program has been forced to rethink how to present live shows amid a global pandemic. What the group came up with is CarPark Sonnets–a drive-in style performance of Shakespeare’s sonnets and monologues.

The show, which kicks off  TWU’s Theatre Program’s 2020/2021 season, is a live theatrical experience which will be performed in a parking lot on the TWU campus.  Audience members tune to a designated FM radio station, and watch the live performance like an old fashioned drive-in movie.

The one-hour performance is a new and playful take on The Bard’s classic sonnets and soliloquies. It pokes fun at Shakespeare, discusses the nature of sonnets and plays from the Apocrypha, and the fragility of life at the time, as compared to now.

No concessions will be sold at the show so theater-goers are encouraged to bring their own snacks and settle in for an hour of comedic and dramatic works.

CarPark Sonnets happen Oct. 14-17 at 8 p.m. All performances will take place at the Faculty and Staff Parking Lot at the corner of Oakland and 3rd Streets, located on the west side of Hubbard Hall on TWU’s Denton campus. Tickets are $5 per car. Due to space limitations only 20 cars per performance will be admitted. Tickets must be reserved online due to COVID-19 safety protocols. Patrons must bring proof of purchase. To reserve tickets online visit twu.edu/theatre.
