“Concert Truck” Tours Dallas Neighborhoods This Holiday Season

ArtandSeek.net 16

The Dallas Symphony Orchestra is hitting the streets for the holidays with the help of “The Concert Truck.”

Baltimore-based pianists Susan Zhang and Nick Luby created the venue-on-wheels in 2016, looking for ways to take their passion for chamber music outside of the concert hall.

“So, Nick came up with this concept actually to convert a box truck into a mobile venue,” Zhang said.

Since then, the 16-foot Concert Truck has presented shows in city streets and at schools, parks and neighborhoods across the country.

All Zhang and Luby have to do is park and play.

“We have lights, sound system and a source of energy, if we need it,” Zhang said. “Then, usually we’ll do a short sound check that often piques people’s interest to see what’s going on over there. Then, we play our show.”

The duo will be performing concerts across the city with musicians from the Dallas Symphony and other local groups through December. Their first stop is at the Potter’s House Church on November 21.

Zhang said the experience offers classical musicians a chance to share their work with a wider audience.

“We are going to people in their own spaces. I think that, in and of itself, is a different kind of relationship than having people come to a space. You almost have to feel like you’re invited in.”

Each concert is free and will be about an hour long. The Dallas Symphony says more dates and locations will be added, including appearances at the Mexican Consulate, One Arts Plaza and the Dallas Arboretum.
