The Fort Worth Museum of Science and History is moving ahead with its annual Polar Pajama Party, but with a socially-distanced spin. 

You can still wear your themed pajamas to the party, said Laura Leckman, the museum’s internal programs assistant manager. But the two-day event will be limited and adhere to new guidelines. 

“We are hoping it brings some fun and holiday joy in the midst of all the insanity that we are currently all going through,” Leckman said.

The museum, which is open with reduced hours, will limit the event to 200 people per day and spread activities for the party throughout the building. Visitors must reserve a ticket and choose between three-time slots. Each time slot will be capped at about 70 people, Leckman said.

This year, the highlight will be a reading of the book, Polar Express, The Magic Journey. Visitors will be assigned socially-distanced seats. Kids can also make a reindeer craft at tables that seat a maximum of six.  All seating will conform to the museum’s guidelines. 

“We really felt that we can bring it back at this scale and still allow it to be done in a safe fashion but allow the tradition to continue of the polar PJ party,” Leckman said. “And give guests who are comfortable coming kind of a taste of what we’ve been able to do in the past and that holiday feeling.”

Museum officials are keeping an eye on COVID cases. If cases continue to rise, the event may be canceled, Leckman said.

The event is set for the evening of Dec. 18 and the morning of Dec. 19.

“We hope people take it and have fun with it,” Leckman said. “A lot of our staff has Christmas-themed masks and things that they will be wearing and they’re going to get in the spirit with wearing ugly holiday sweaters and PJ’s.”
