A Guide to This Weekend’s Gallery Extravaganza

ArtandSeek.net 27

With the start of September, new art abounds in North Texas. From the abundance of opening receptions to art talks and art walks, there’s little chance you’ll be able to see it all this weekend — but that’s not going to stop you from trying, is it? From the seasoned art aficionado to the uninitiated, September is one of the best times to discover what makes DFW such a thriving art scene.

Here are some of the weekend’s highlights in art happenings:

1. Objects From A Future Past

Alison Jardine’s first solo exhibition with Erin Cluley Gallery explores her love of nature and a concern for its future. Her current series, Urban Flora, consists of cement casts of plastic bags found in nature and imbued with charcoal and pigments.

When: Book signing @ 5 p.m./Reception @ 6 p.m.

David Conn

The Botanical Research Institute of Texas (BRIT), located in Fort Worth, hosts a collection of paintings and prints from local printmaker and Shaw Street Studio founder David Conn. Conn is an expert in the creation of linocuts, a printmaking technique where artists use carved linoleum blocks as a relief surface. The result is an intricate weaving of lines reminiscent of a dense forest. Paintings and Prints 2000- 2016 will be open from Sept. 8 – Oct. 26.

When: Reception @ 6 p.m.

Where: Botanical Research Institute of Texas, 1700 University Drive (Fort Worth)

Zhuang Hong Yi

Chinese contemporary artist Zhuang Hong Yi presents new works at an introductory solo exhibition at Laura Rathe Fine Art. His vibrant “flower bed” creations are constructed from rice paper, which Hong Yi paints and folds by hand. The result is richly-textured works which beg to be seen up close and from all angles.
