A Look Ahead At Highlights From The Art&Seek Calendar

There’s no denying there are lots of seasonal happenings going on right now. If seeing a production of “The Nutcracker” or meeting up with family and friends at a festive parade, tree lighting, open house or other holiday-related event is what you like, we definitely got you covered. But the NorthTexas area has so much more to offer. Check out our list below and check it twice, for a sampling of events from the Art&Seek calendar.

Wednesday

The Dorothy Shaw Bell Choir performs “The Littlest Wiseman” at the W.E. Scott Theatre at the Fort Worth Community Arts Center. The pageant tells the story of the nativity. This could be the final season for the  59-year-old Fort Worth cultural treasure. The yearly presentation is a gift from the choir to the community so the show is free. However, tickets are required to get in so make your reservation soon.

In Dallas, head to City Tavern for the second Wednesday residency of local band Skinny Cooks. The ensemble plays an eclectic and funky jazz mix complete with cellos, vibraphones, and more.

Palace Arts Center in Grapevine welcomes back Emmy Award winners The Texas Tenors. The Tenors holiday concert, “Deep in the Heart of Christmas,” features seasonal favorites and classic pop hits mixed with original songs.

Thursday

Cara Mia Theatre Company’s “Swimming While Drowning” continues at the Latino Cultural Center in Dallas. The play explores the resilience of young gay and trans teens through the stories of two homeless teens as they build a bond that inspires them to reach for understanding and self-acceptance.

In Arlington, “Hooray For Holidays: Theatre Arlington’s Musical TV Special” is modeled after classic holiday variety shows with music, dancing, and special guests. This show is fun and appropriate for audience members 3 and up.

Tonight is the last Plano Art & Wine Walk for the year in the Downtown Plano Arts District. Participants can sample wines while enjoying live music and local art. The theme for December’s walk is Winter Onesie-land.

Friday

Dallas Black Dance Theatre Presents Academy Espresso Nutcracker at the Majestic Theatre in Dallas. The twist on the holiday tradition is the only Nutcracker of color in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.

The Theatre of North Texas in Southlake presents “Christmas Belles.” The comedy follows a trio of sisters and their misadventures on Christmas Eve.

Theatre Coppell performs “The Doggonest Christmas.” The family-friendly play is based on the classic book by Richard L. Stack. It tells the story of a woman who adopts a puppy who dreams about being a hero. The little guy gets a chance when he ends up rescuing Santa and his reindeer.

Saturday/Sunday

On Saturday, the Fort Worth Civic Orchestra presents the Teddy Bear Concert at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. The concert features choirs from Fort Worth elementary schools singing holiday favorites. The show is free, but audience members are asked to bring a new, unwrapped stuffed animal to help the Fort Worth Police Department aid children in crisis.

Also on Saturday, AT&T Performing Arts Center hosts Oscar award-winning director Spike Lee at the Winspear Opera House. Lee’s appearance is part of the HereHear series which features leaders, thinkers, and innovators discussing their crafts.

Lake Bob Sandlin State Park is all decked out for Christmas in the Park this weekend. Take a drive through the East Texas park and check out all the campsites decorated for the holidays. You can also take part in the ugly Christmas sweater contest, do some crafts with kids and get a photo with Santa.

On Sunday catch Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears at Fort Worth’s Ridglea Theater Theatre. The show is presented by 91.7 KXT, and celebrates the 10th anniversary of the album “Tell ‘Em What Your Name Is!”

Monday

Texas Discovery Gardens in Fair Park hosts “Beneath the Surface.” The Coral Reef installation features 2D resin art and 3D fiber sculptural works representative of coral forms.

Palace Arts Center in Grapevine screens the 1946 holiday classic “It’s a Wonderful Life.” The movie stars James Stewart, Donna Reed & Lionel Barrymore and follows an angel who is sent from heaven to help a businessman by showing him what life would have been like if he had never existed.

Load up the family and head to the Prairie Lights at Lynn Creek Park in Grand Prairie. The holiday light installation features over 4 million lights set along 2 miles of path.

Tuesday

‘One On This Island’ opens tonight at the Winspear Opera House. The Tony Award-winning musical tells the story of a fearless peasant girl in search of her place in the world and ready to risk it all for love.

Make your holiday merry and bright with Frisco’s Christmas in the Square. The event is the largest choreographed holiday lights and music show in North Texas and also features ice skating, a tree maze, and visits with Santa.

Grab the kids and make your way to the Coyote Drive-In in Fort Worth for Panther Island Ice. The outdoor skating rink is open 7 days a week through January 20th.
