Wednesday

Celebrate 30 years of jazz music programming tonight at the Sammons Center for the Arts in Dallas. Sammons Jazz Artistic Director Arlington Jones will perform both sets. Don’t miss it.

In Richardson, the Edith O’Donnell Institute of Art History at UT Dallas hosts a reception for the second issue of “Athenaeum Review.” The art magazine, featuring essays, reviews, and interviews, is published by the institute.

Thursday

Italian musician Leonardo Pierdomenico is a standout classical pianist and regularly performs in recital halls around the world. But tonight you can see him perform at the Central Branch of the Fort Worth Public Library, a Cliburn in the Community concert.

Head to the Courthouse-on-the-Square in Denton to a hear Caribbean sounds from the UNT Steel Drum Band

Friday

The Fort Worth Opera is tackling a new work tonight. Be sure to head to the Botanic Garden, and not the symphony hall,  to see the world premiere of “Companionship: Night of the Living Bread.” It’s a deliciously dark comedy about a baker’s journey to make the perfect baguette.

“Babette’s Feast” is the story of how one amazing meal – and many good works – transform a small community and the refugee they take in. See the theater adaptation at Amphibian Stage Productions in Fort Worth.

Saturday/Sunday

Throughout the weekend, UT Arlington’s Maverick Dance Company presents a collection of thought-provoking and entertaining performances by faculty, guests, and student choreographers. See the show “Via Dance” in the Fine Arts Building on the UTA campus.

Fan Expo, the largest comic, sci-fi, horror, anime and gaming event in Texas also happens this weekend.  The three-day celebration of all things nerdy takes over Dallas’ Convention Center. On Saturday you can see the stars like Michael J Fox, Sean Astin,  and Peter Mayhew.

On Saturday, Arts Mission Oak Cliff hosts choreographer Ebony Noelle Golden for a performance called “The Dallas Project: Routes.” It’s about the history of the medical industrial complex and reproductive justice. The performance will be followed by a short panel discussion led by the performers.

On Sunday, Shipping & Receiving Bar in Fort Worth has a day-long arts event planned called Roots and Branches. The day includes music and an interactive gallery show.

Monday

The Fort Worth Community Arts Center has a selection of works by emerging artists from universities in the region. “Mayjoring in Art; Higher Learning” is on view through May 21.

Time is running out to see Martin Brief’s installation of Hope. The work reflects on both the optimism and hopelessness of the future. See it at the Bernice Coulter Templeton Art Studio on the campus of Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth.

Tuesday

The Houston-based artist Frank X. Tolbert is known for his collection of drawings and paintings of birds from Texas. See them firsthand at his latest exhibition at the Tyler Museum of Art through Aug. 4. 

Buildings, structures, and landscapes are the focus of a different exhibition on view right now. Head to the Dallas Museum of Art to see America Will Be!: Surveying the Contemporary Landscape.
