It seems for months now we’ve been eagerly waiting the premiere of the summer movies for kids. The trailers have been teasing us since before Christmas and it seemed as though Mowgli, the Angry birds and Dory would never get here. Finally getting to see the summer blockbusters is a pretty big thrill. Keep the moving-going excitement going with one of these out-of-the-ordinary flick picks.

Celebrate the midway point of summer this Friday night with a picnic, friends and an outdoor movie. Head to the Amon Carter Museum of American Art great big, beautiful lawn for Sunset Cinema. This week they’re screening the Coen Brother’s classic ‘O Brother, Where Art Thou?’ The lawn opens at 6 p.m. and film begins at 8:30 p.m.

The Nasher Sculpture Center will also have an outdoor movie this Friday as part of its ‘Til Midnight at the Nasher event. The evening starts off with an acoustic singer-songwriter showcase, a concert by Northern National Foxtrot Uniform followed by a screening in the garden of the comedy classic, ‘Weekend at Bernie’s.’  Besides the concert and the movie, you and the kiddos will also have the opportunity to participate in social media scavenger hunts, progressive tours and to view the permanent collection and special exhibitions.

Betcha didn’t know July is National Parks and Recreation Month. Celebrate at City Lake Park in Mesquite this Friday night with outdoor movie at the Movies in the Park event. They’ll be screening the holiday comedy ‘Elf’ to remind you of cooler temperatures and that Christmas is only five short months away. The movie will start at dusk, but the pre-show entertainment starts at 7 p.m. so get there early.

Speaking of movies under the stars, you can do plenty of star gazing without having to worry about the humidity or mosquitoes at the Planetarium at the University of Texas in Arlington. There are many shows to choose from, but one of the best is ‘Texas Stargazing.’ Kiddos can learn what planets and constellations are visible in the night sky tonight. There’s also a show for small fries called ‘One World, One Sky: Big Bird’s Adventure.’ It’s a fun romp with Big Bird and his Sesame Street Muppet pals as they explore the moon.

For a really big adventure via the silver screen take a peek into the very exciting lives of the world’s smallest animals in the 3D live action film ‘Tiny Giants.’ Intricate, immersive cameras give you an inside look as to what it’s like to be a little chipmunk in a big, scary world. More than a reality show featuring cute rodents, it’s actually a hero’s tale that will have you on the edge of your seat. You can see it daily now through Sept. 5 at the Hoglund Foundation Theater inside the Perot Museum of Nature and Science.

Grab the floaties and head to Rowlett’s Wet Zone water park on Friday night for Flick and Float. You and the tinies can enjoy a screening of the movie ‘Pixels’ from the comfort of your lawn chair or float!  The film is free with admission or $6 after 7 p.m. You can also grab a $3 Hyena Hot Dog meal deal will begin at 7:30 p.m.  The movie starts around 8:30 p.m.

The nice folks at NRH2O Family Water Park in North Richland Hills are hosting their own outdoor movie event this Friday night. You and your little guppies can see Disney’s newest version of ‘Cinderella’ from a suspended screen over the wave pool. If the waves make you seasick, you can also watch the show from the sandy (and motionless) beach. Movies will run every Friday at NRH2O through August 5 and are included with admission.
