Hip, Hip Hooray! It’s time for International Literacy Day! That’s right, the most bookish time of the year is right around the corner on Sept. 8. The goal of the day is simple–literacy for everyone, everywhere.

It’s no secret that I love Literacy Day. It’s the perfect opportunity to share all the exceptional children’s books I’ve encountered since I became a parent. You can never have enough suggestions for good kid books, because, you know–bedtime. For that reason, I’ve covered the topic of “best books” a few times here. First, with a list of my personal top 10 favorite children’s books. Then the following year I asked librarians to weigh in on their favorite kid books. And, rounding out the series is my favorite– KERA/KXT staff picks for favorite childhood books; because everyone wants to know what Krys Boyd and Sam Baker read when they were kids.

In addition to picking out their books, kiddos age 6-12 can get artsy this Saturday afternoon at the Walnut Creek Branch of the Garland Public Library. They’ll learn about different types of art, then develop their STEAM art skills by creating their own masterpieces. Watercolor paintings of trees is on the agenda at this month’s Art Explorers event.  All the supplies are provided, but registration is required and the event limited to 24 participants so don’t wait to snag a spot.

Kids who like petting zoos but are hankerin’ for something a little bit different won’t want to miss CritterWoman this Saturday at Plano Public Library’s Harrington branch. The CritterWoman will be rolling out the “Extra Furry” edition of her show, that means no scales and more fur! Kids can see animal ambassadors like rabbits, ferrets, and hedgehogs up close. And if they want, they can touch one too.

There’s no better way to encourage reading and enjoying books with your toddler than with a story right from your lap. Baby Jamboree at Halton City Public Library is just the ticket. The weekly event features a sweet lap-sit storytime for ages 2 and under. It happens every Thursday at 10:45 in the morning so it’s the perfect activity to sneak in right before nap time.

The Farmers Branch Manske Library is staying open late on Saturday night for an after-hours carnival. They will have carnival games, face painting, cotton candy, a balloon artist, and more at this family-friendly event. Be sure to stick around because at 7:30 there will be a free screening of a film. Here’s a hint about which movie they’re showing: He’s everyone’s favorite flying circus elephant!

Who says storytime is just for kids? Join the Dallas Public Library at Main Street Garden every second Saturday of the month for Waggin’ Tales, their story hour just for dogs. You and your furbaby can enjoy the delights of listening to a good story all while enjoying a lovely time at the park together! After the story, get those leashes ready and take a romp in the park with Fido!
