The cold, rainy and all-around dreary weather we’ve experienced in the last week certainly hasn’t done much to remind us that spring break is just around the corner. But, yep, the littles are going to be out of school for a whole week and itching for something to do in just a week or so.

Whether you’ve been distracted by unseasonable temperatures or just let the time get away from you, don’t sweat it. There’s still time to get the wee ones out of the house and having a good time this spring break. Check out the Junior’s list of super fun spring break day camps.

During the cold winter months many of our animal friends either leave town or hide in a cozy burrow to keep warm. Some of the animals at the Fort Worth Zoo are just beginning to venture out; and you can play hide and seek with them at a special spring break camp. Campers in 1st through 5th grade will seek out the knowledge needed to uncover some of the Zoo’s most elusive creatures and then head out to find them. There will be zoo hikes, animal presentations, crafts and activities throughout the week. You can sign up for the whole week or just one day if you like.

If anyone can coax spring out of hiding it’s the people at the Dallas Arboretum. This time of year the place is literally exploding with over 500,000 flowers for Dallas Blooms. The annual event is timed perfectly for all the spring breakers out there who want to kick up their heels and play among the posies. While you’re at the garden enjoying the flora and fauna, be sure to stop by the Children’s Adventure Garden for STEAM Career Week. Kids 5 and up will have a chance to explore STEAM topics (science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics) with professionals from around the Metroplex. Besides being all kinds of fun, the hands-on activities and demonstrations are designed to inspire children to pursue careers in STEAM fields.

A great camp for kids who love to create and invent is Camp SCRAP in Denton. The name says it all. Camp SCRAP is an art camp centered on themes of creative reuse. The theme this spring break is Wild World of Creatures and Critters! Kids ages 6-12 can create animals, insects and habitats from reused materials and, you guessed it–scraps! Projects are a mix of staff lead projects and free building with access to a craft supply wall chock-full of materials to choose from. The 3-day camp is for kids 6-12. You also have the option of going just one day.

Take a trip inside the mind this spring break at the Greater Denton Arts Council. Kids 6-10 can explore emotions and how to portray them through drawing, painting, clay, music and dance in this 5-day camp. Campers will draw inspiration from exhibitions inside the center and outdoor space for their creations. On the last day of camp, parents and friends are invited to view the collection of artwork made during the week.

Don’t let your little sloths languish away on the couch this spring break. Get them away from the video games and into the great outdoors at one of the mini-camps at the Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary in McKinney. Each mini-camp explores a different natural science topic. Learn about reptiles on Tuesday migration on Wednesday, and space exploration on Thursday. And of course, the camps also include indoor activities and time outside exploring the 289-acre sanctuary. The half-day camps are for kids in kindergarten through 6th grade.
