It’s February! The month of hearts, flowers, and candy valentines. It’s also the month of fickle weather. One day February is tempting us to come outside and play with warm temperatures and sunny weather. And the very next, she says “Ha ha! Fooled you! It’s still winter!” and give us a day that’s blustery, cold and icy.

This month, more than ever, you have to have a Plan B when dealing with activities for the kiddos. With that in mind, welcome February with these picks–some inside, some outside.

The weather for this weekend is forecasted to be sunny and a little chilly. Pack a sweater and head to the Nasher Sculpture Center’s Target First Saturday event. In addition to seeing all the fabulous sculpture works up close and personal in the center’s garden-like setting, if the weather turns cool, there’s the option to head inside where a variety of art programming geared especially for kids awaits. The free event includes an art scavenger hunt, yoga in the garden, and a craft activity.

Do the kids have cabin fever? Burn off that extra energy this Sunday afternoon with a trip to SPARK! In case you’re not familiar, SPARK! is a creative environment for kids located in the sub-basement of the South Side on Lamar building, In addition to hands-on art activities like a Giant Light Bright, Recycled Art, Chalk Art, Poetry Magnets and Percussion, it also features a climb, crawl, and slide sculpture that spans over 6,000 feet and climbs 26 feet toward the ceiling. The event is open to children in 2nd grade through high school and chaperones are required.

Curious to see if the little kiddles have the stamina for a concert or a play? Well, an excellent litmus test would be The Dallas Opera’s production of “The Three Little Pigs” at the Winspear Opera House this Saturday afternoon. This short concert (about an hour) is the perfect primer to opera. It’s based on scenes from operas by Wolfgang A. Mozart and tells the classic tale with an emphasis on the importance of reading and harnessing a love for learning as the three piggies do their best to keep Wolfgang Bigbad at bay. Come early for fun in the lobby and crafts.

Do your kids like to make their own Valentines? Get their creative juices going with a visit to Oil and Cotton Creative Exchange for Saturday Drop-in Art. The hour-long workshop will explore materials, ideas, and techniques. Kids 4-8 come at 10 a.m. and older kids 8-12 come at 11 a.m. Parents are welcome to stay or pop next door for a leisurely slow cup of coffee.

Normally drone flying is an outdoor activity, but this Saturday the mechanical birds move indoors when Addison’s Cavanaugh Flight Museum presents Drone Wars V, a contest that’s part robot wars, part air show, and part NASCAR. In Drone Wars V the race will take place inside the museum’s 11,000 hangar as operators of the sci-fi flying machines compete on a precision 3-D line of sight obstacle course. The netted course includes hoops, pylons, bridges, turns and slaloms. You can watch the drone pilots battle it out for just $10 for adults and $5 for kids. Between heats you can learn about flying a drone and try out the sport in a test flight from one of the area suppliers who will be on hand to show you the ropes.
