ArtandSeek.net 36

North Texas artists, who have exhibited work for at least 10 years and have advocated for the visual arts in their community, are encouraged to apply for an annual award, which offers a $2,500 cash prize.

Artists interested in applying to The Moss/Chumley North Texas Artist Award can submit five to 10 digital images of original work from the last five years, along with a resume that details at least a decade of professional experience, community advocacy for the arts and this application.

Submitted work should fall into one of these artistic genres: drawing, painting, sculpture, assemblage, construction, video, photography, performance or installation.

The award, in its 20th year, goes to an artist residing in one of these North Texas counties: Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Hunt, Johnson, Kaufman, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant or Wise.

Last year’s winner was Darryl Lauster, who is an artist who uses digital media, printmaking, sculpture and installation and an associate professor of sculpture at the University of Texas at Arlington. Here is a list of all of the award winners since 1995.

The annual prize is presented by Southern Methodist University’s Meadows Museum and The Moss/Chumley Memorial Fund.

The fund was started in 1989 by Frank Moss and the museum as a tribute to Jim Chumley, according to a press release. Moss and Chumley were Dallas art dealers in the 1980s, and they operated the Nimbus Gallery on Routh Street from 1980 to 1987 and the Moss/Chumley Gallery at the Crescent Court from 1986 to 1989, according to a press release.

All entries must be submitted by Nov. 11 for the jury process. The winner will be announced at a private museum event on Dec. 9.
