Even though the physical stage is dark right now, Dallas Children’s Theater at Rosewood Center for Family Arts is doing its best to stay connected with its audiences. Sandra Session-Robertson, Senior Director of Communications and Philanthropy, says everyone at DCT has been busy rolling out virtual content and theater education for little theater lovers.

“We’re doing a lot of Zoom meetings with students in our academy classes. Our teaching artists are recording videos to share with their students. We are also sending videos to our sensory-friendly families and general audiences and we’re offering a HumpDay Actor Brain Break every Wednesday for anyone who signs up.”

Here’s a quick update on some of DCT’s offerings during this quarantine.

DCT recently shared the clownish, quarantined antics of Slappy and Monday who are usually found delighting audiences at DCT before every sensory-friendly performance.

On DCT’s YouTube channel, there’s a three-part series showcasing the best way to orchestrate an at-home puppet show! It makes for a fun family activity. Part 1 – character creation Part 2 – staging Part 3 – the show itself

Fans at home can join a 20-minute free Zoom session with DCT actor-in-residence Karl Shaeffer. He will challenge brains and bodies with activities and games that actors use to hone their skills. And, they are great stress busters just when we need them most. If the response is good, DCT plans to make it a regular HumpDay offering each week.

Dallas Children’s Theater

Classes in the Dallas Children’s Theater Academy are still going strong, even digitally. DCT released this mini-session from Lindsey Campbell’s (or as DCT regulars know her: Miss Lindsey) She leads her students through a series of fun tongue twisters, and other exercises designed to warm up the body and mind. While it was originally intended to be a private video, just for her acting class only, DCT decided to make it public for everyone to enjoy. After all, everyone needs a laugh, a warm teacher and great brain stimulation.

And at this time, interested families can still check out what is slated for DCT’s famous Showbiz Summer Camps. DCT continues to monitor the COVID-19 situation and will adjust plans as needed.

DCT’s team is sharing age-appropriate, pre-recorded plays from colleagues across the country and other tips and videos that can be resources for parents during this shelter-in-place time. A wide variety of content is available ranging from storytime with famous authors, to full-length theatrical productions.
