KXT Live Session: Abraham Alexander

Musician Abraham Alexander is a soulful singer with a sensual voice, a reserved demeanor and the sort of face that makes women swoon. And if that trifecta wasn’t lethal enough, the clean-cut, 28-year-old Fort Worth artist is about to release his first album next month and the  buzz is growing.

Do you love watching live music? Great. So do we. We like sharing the love too. Check out the KXT Live Sessions archive on YouTube to see who’s performed in our studios.

The first song off of Alexander’s upcoming, self-titled record is called “Lovers Game.” It’s a pleading tune. Alexander implores his partner to slow down and enjoy the fleeting moments of joy in their otherwise tumultuous relationship. Alexander, like many R&B singers these days, sings the tune in a higher register. His voice doesn’t strain, like Childish Gambino’s, nor smolder, like Marvin Gaye’s, but like silk, it lays smooth and glossy over the song’s bluesy instrumentals. As KXT’s Gini Mascorro put it, in an article for NPR Music, it’s “a soothing take on l’amour in the dating app age.”

Alexander began playing music at a young age. As a kid, he would fool around with his father’s guitar. But his real pursuit of music began several years ago after a college soccer injury ended his athletic career. Soon after, Alexander was writing songs and eventually singing back-up vocals on Leon Bridges’ critically acclaimed debut album “Coming Home.”

Like Bridges, Alexander has taken a retro approach to craft his debut effort. The album was taped locally at Dallas’ Modern Electric Sound Recorders (home to the Texas Gentlemen and producer Beau Bedford) and mastered at Abbey Road Studios in London. But unlike Bridges, Alexander hasn’t crafted a nostalgic album. Instead, he’s written about divorce, online dating and everything surrounding love in the digital age.

Preview the record and Alexander’s fresh take on Texas music as he performs three songs for KXT’s live music series.
