Suzy Jones, Executive Director of the ArtCentre of Plano

The ArtCentre of Plano, like most organizations and art galleries, has been closed since March, but times are changing. Suzy Jones, Executive Director at The ArtCentre of Plano, says they are excited to re-open July 1 with the exhibition, “Beneath The Surface Re-imagined.”

This installation features the colorful works of artists Christine and Keith Miller and interprets the vibrant, enigmatic coral reef. The exhibition exists to bring awareness to the precarious state of the world’s coral reefs. The ArtCentre of Plano will also open its outdoor sculpture garden on July 6, featuring the works of Jerry Dodd.

2020 would have marked the 17th year ArtCentre hosts its free summer camp, Jumpstart For Arts, a program designed for children who don’t have the opportunity to attend art summer camps or after school art lessons.

In the past, the camp offered art, dance, music and drama to school-aged children. This year, COVID-19 had other plans, but Jones says she isn’t going to let the pandemic stop ArtCentre from giving back to underprivileged communities.

Jumpstart For Arts…To Go! is the new title, and it’s still completely free. Parents or guardians can pick up a carefully prepared art bag made for kids on Saturday, July 22, from 9 a.m. – noon. To sign up for one or to sponsor an Art Bag at $25, you can email or call 972-423-7809.

The ArtCentre of Plano is also eager to begin renting its facility again for private events like weddings and parties. The indoor art gallery and outdoor performance deck are surrounded by large trees and green lawns, and guests can experience displayed art, a large performance deck, bandstand, dance area, outdoor restrooms, caterer’s kitchen, audio/visual equipment, and wraparound porch, all in the Downtown Plano Arts District.
