Together/Apart: The Isolation Of The COVID Artist

ArtandSeek.net 17

All three of our virtual State of the Arts conversations this spring will address how COVID has affected North Texas’ cultural community. But this time, it’s not about the vanishing ticket sales or how many jobs have been lost.

For our first panel, we talked with three Dallas-area artists — Joy Bollinger, artistic director of Bruce Wood Dance, Ruben Carrazana, one of the theater artists who created The Cube, and visual artist Shelby David Meier, whose work was recently showcased at the Nasher Sculpture Center. We asked about their personal experiences with the isolation and loss that the pandemic has brought to all of us.

But also, how have these artists addressed it? Have they used the experience of the pandemic for their artworks? Have they learned anything about themselves in the process?
