As movie theater’s across the nation are closed, drive-in theaters are making their way back to the present. The large outdoor movie screen and the comfort of being in one’s vehicle are proving to be a reassuring relief during a time of social distancing.

Reid Robinson, organizer of CarBaret, came up with the idea of starting a Friday and Saturday night drive-in theater at his Richardson bar, Brizo

CarBaret happens this Friday and Saturday night. RSVP on the CarBaret Facebook page. Art&Seek’s Jerome Weeks went to Carbaret. Read his account.

“I was thinking about cars, the Gemini drive-in theater and entertainment and that’s when the idea of CarBaret popped into my head,” Robinson said. “It’s kind of drive-in movie and vaudeville show experience.”

Granted concession stands are not the same as they once were, accommodations are being made by organizers with a curbside service to fit the current consequences of COVID-19. Everything from burgers, grilled cheese, fries, popcorn, and drinks are served from the Brizo kitchen and bar.

“Guests tune into a micro-broadcast on their car or transistor radio,” Robinson said. “We also have full car-hop service delivered to the safety of your car.”

From a distance, live music, DJing, and video mixes are played before the movie screening. Musical guests such as Punktronica, Paul Slavens, and ishi have played for guests. At the May 9 show, ishi live-streamed their performance on Facebook Live.

I'll be performing live with @disco_tx tonight! Stream my set on Ishi's FB Live & Instagram live. 8pm showtime! Venmo: John-Mudd
