A group of collective artists will walk in the Dallas protest today with yellow umbrellas to honor those killed in police custody.

The yellow umbrellas symbolize hope and liberation, said Teresa Nguyen, one of the collective’s artist and founder of Lan Rose PR.

“They’re bright in the midst of what’s happening,” Nguyen said. “We hope that we continue to carry their names and that they’re not forgotten.”

Names of those killed will be shown in black. Black and yellow are the colors of The Movement For Black Lives. The group checked with Dallas chapter In Defense of Black Lives to ensure sensitivity and respect.

Nguyen said the bright umbrellas are to amplify the message but to also protect protestors from the sun and possible tear gas and rubber bullets.

“We hope it gives hope and liberation and makes a bold statement,” Nguyen said. “We hope this evolves and this grows.”

Some of the names on the umbrellas will include: Tony McDade; Muhlaysia Booker; Chynal Lindsey; Atatiana Jefferson; Clinton R. Allen; Tesfaie Mokuria; Santos Rodriguez; Jawar Cannon; Jason Harrison; Bertrand S. Davis; Botham Jean; Fred Bradford Jr.; Jordan Edwards; Elias Portillo; Anthony Garcia; Tobias Mackey; Genevive Dawes; Ross Allen Anthony; Jose Gonzalez;  and Jose Cruz.

The protest will begin at 3:30 p.m.
